The three types of smart glasses: what each one is actually for

"Smart glasses" is not one category. It is three, and they resemble each other about as much as a Bluetooth speaker resembles a television.

Shops mix them together, YouTube reviews compare them against each other, and "best AI glasses of 2026" lists rank products that are not competing for the same buyer. The result is predictable: people buy glasses expecting something that type of glasses does not do, and find out a week later.

This guide separates the three families for good. Not by their spec sheets, but by the only thing that matters before you look at prices: what each one is built to do.

The most common mix-up, first

Plenty of people assume XR glasses are the "basic" ones: no artificial intelligence and no display.

It is exactly the other way round. XR glasses are all display. Of the three families they have by far the biggest, brightest and fastest screen. What they lack is AI and a camera.

Meanwhile the best-selling AI glasses in the world — the Ray-Ban Metas — have no display at all. You do not see anything with them. You hear them.

So the family called "AI glasses" may have no screen, and the family with no AI has the most screen. Which is why this article needs to exist.

The question that separates them: where are you looking?

Forget spec sheets for a moment. The three categories answer three different situations:

  • You are out living your life and want help without pulling out your phone → AI glasses, no display.
  • You are out living your life and need to read something while you do → AI glasses with a display.
  • You have sat down to watch or work on a screen → XR.

The first two leave you looking at the world. The third puts something in front of the world. That is the whole difference, and no firmware update fixes it.

The thirteen models, sorted

A summary before we go family by family. The score is the one on our model page, and it only compares within its own column: a 7.9 for an XR model and a 7.9 for AI glasses are not measuring the same thing.

Three things visible at a glance that explain a lot about this market. Meta owns the entire first column and no other brand has broken into it: the best-selling category is also the most closed. The second column is Chinese apart from Meta and Even Realities, and it is where all the risky innovation is happening. The third is almost a RayNeo monopoly — RayNeo builds both wearable displays and AI glasses, which is why it appears in two columns with products that have nothing in common.

1. AI, no display

What they are: ordinary glasses with speakers in the arms, microphones, a camera and a voice assistant. They look exactly like a pair of Ray-Bans, because in several cases they are a pair of Ray-Bans.

What you do with them: ask questions out loud and get answers in your ear. Shoot first-person photo and video hands-free. Listen to music, take calls. On some models, live conversation translation.

What you don't do: read. There is nothing to read. Ask for directions and you are told them, not shown them.

The real numbers from the catalogue: 50–66 g, 8–9 hours of battery, €419–549. They are the lightest to wear all day and, by a wide margin, the longest-lasting.

This is where the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 2, the Oakley Meta HSTN and the Oakley Meta Vanguard sit.

Who they are for: almost anyone starting out. It is the most mature category, the cheapest, the one with the best battery and the only one nobody notices you are wearing. It is also the one that grew 167 % in a year — and that growth is not about the technology, it is about not looking like a device.

2. AI with a display

What they are: the same thing, plus a tiny screen projected onto the lens through a waveguide — a layer that carries light from a projector in the arm to your eye. You see text and icons floating over the real scene, without losing the real scene.

What you do with them: read a message without reaching for your phone. Follow an arrow through a city. See subtitles of what someone is saying to you in another language, while they say it. A teleprompter only you can see.

What you don't do: watch a film. The screen covers 20° to 30° of your field of view. It is a corner, not a cinema. It is designed to be glanced at for two seconds before you go back to the world.

The real numbers: the range is enormous, and it hides a rule worth understanding. Models with a camera and a colour display land at 1.5 to 6 hours — the RayNeo X3 Pro manages ninety minutes. Models that drop the camera and use a green monochrome display reach 48 hours: the Even Realities G2 weighs 36 g and the RayNeo iO 33 g, less than many sunglasses.

That is the hidden trade in this category: colour and camera, or battery life and weight. Nobody has both yet.

Who they are for: anyone who can say in one sentence what they want the display for. If the answer is "just in case", this is not your category — you will pay twice as much and use the screen five minutes a day.

3. XR: display only, no AI

What they are: a monitor you wear. Inside each arm is a micro-OLED panel, and what you see is the image sent by a phone, a console or a laptop over USB-C.

What you do with them: watch a film on a plane on a 200-inch screen that exists only for you. Play a console on the sofa without taking over the TV. Work with several virtual monitors on a train.

What you don't do: talk to them. No AI. No camera. No assistant. They do not take photos, do not translate, do not answer questions. And they do not work alone: without the device they are plugged into, they are a paperweight.

The real numbers: 47° to 57° of field of view on the models you can buy today — the announced GT Max reaches 59° — which is two to three times what an AI display covers. 76–87 g. €299–649.

And the giveaway spec: zero hours of battery of their own. That is not a flaw, it is the design. A monitor does not carry a battery; it draws from whatever feeds it the picture.

In the catalogue these are the XREAL One Pro, the VITURE Luma Pro and the RayNeo Air 4 Pro, plus the RayNeo GT and GT Max announced at IFA 2026, for which RayNeo has published neither prices nor how they are powered.

Who they are for: anyone who wants a big portable screen. It is an excellent and fairly mature product. It simply is not the product people are looking for when they search for artificial intelligence.

How to spot a badly researched list

Three signs the writer has not separated the categories:

  1. It compares XREAL against Ray-Ban Meta. Different markets. It is a monitor against a pair of headphones.
  2. It calls the field of view of AI glasses "small". 25° is normal and correct for a HUD: any bigger and you could not walk down the street wearing it.
  3. It calls something "AI glasses" when it needs a cable. If it needs a phone plugged in to switch on, it has no assistant of its own.

That is why XR glasses are never compared against AI glasses on Glaiss: the comparison tool only pairs models from the same family. Putting a 55° screen against a 25° one would produce a fake winner, because they are not trying to do the same job.

Will there still be three next year?

Probably not. The boundary that moves first will be the middle one: AI glasses whose display grows big enough for video, or XR glasses that gain an assistant. The RayNeo X3 Pro already carries 6DoF — headset technology — in an AI glasses body.

Do XR glasses have artificial intelligence? No. XR glasses — XREAL, VITURE, RayNeo's Air range — are wearable displays: one micro-OLED panel per eye showing the image a phone, console or laptop sends over USB-C. They have no camera, no voice assistant and no internet connection of their own. They appear constantly in "AI glasses" lists through a category error.

Do AI glasses have a display? It depends on the model, and that is exactly what splits the category. Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta have none: they answer by voice. The Meta Ray-Ban Display, RayNeo iO, RayNeo X3 Pro, Rokid Glasses and Even Realities G2 do carry a small screen on the lens, covering 20° to 30° of your field of view.

If both have screens, what is the difference between display AI glasses and XR glasses? Size and purpose. An AI display covers 20°–30° and is meant to be glanced at for two seconds: a notification, a navigation arrow, a subtitle. An XR display covers 47°–57° and is meant to be watched for an hour: a film, a game, a desktop. AI glasses also work on their own; XR glasses need a device attached.

Which category should I buy first? AI glasses without a display, unless you have a specific reason for something else. They are the cheapest, the lightest, the longest-lasting and the least conspicuous. If you later miss reading things on the lens, you will know exactly what you want a display for — which is the only way to choose well in the second category.

Can XR glasses be used as a work monitor? Yes, and it is one of their strongest uses: current models show one or several virtual 1080p-per-eye monitors over USB-C from a laptop or a compatible phone. The practical limits are weight on the nose over long sessions and the cable itself.

How long does the battery last in each type? AI without a display: 8–9 hours of mixed use. AI with a display: from ninety minutes (RayNeo X3 Pro, colour screen and camera) to 48 hours (Even Realities G2 and RayNeo iO, monochrome and no camera). XR: no meaningful battery of its own, since it draws from the device it is connected to.

Why doesn't Glaiss compare XR glasses with AI glasses? Because they do not compete. A comparison scores two products against the same criteria, and here the criteria do not overlap: scoring the AI of an XREAL would mean giving it a zero for something it never claimed to have.
