AI glasses with an iPhone: what you lose compared to Android

Every pair of AI glasses on sale says it supports iOS and Android. Both statements are true. They are not equivalent.
The gap is not about the glasses. It is about what Apple lets a third-party accessory do on iOS, and it shows up in exactly the places you would use the glasses most: messaging, photo transfer, and hands-free replies.

Nothing in the core experience is missing on iPhone. The camera, the assistant, the audio and the translation are the same. What you lose is the connective tissue — the small integrations that make the glasses feel like part of the phone rather than an accessory to it.
Where the difference actually bites
Messaging
This is the biggest gap and the one people notice first.
On Android, the companion app has broader access to notifications and to sending messages across apps, so "reply to that" tends to just work. On iOS, Apple restricts what a third-party app can do with Messages and with the notification stream. Third-party apps like WhatsApp and Messenger work well on both — that path goes through the app itself, not through the system. Native SMS is where iPhone users hit walls.
If your main use case is "answer messages without taking my phone out", an iPhone will frustrate you more often.
Transfers
Both platforms transfer over a direct Wi-Fi link between glasses and phone. In practice, iPhone users report slower and less consistent transfers, especially for video and especially when the app has been in the background.
This is a background-execution difference, not a hardware one. iOS suspends background apps more aggressively, so the transfer has to resume when you next open the app rather than finishing quietly on its own.
The workaround is unglamorous but effective: open the companion app and leave it in the foreground while a batch of video transfers.
The assistant button
On most Android phones you can make the glasses' assistant your default. On iOS you cannot displace Siri. It sounds minor and it is minor, right up until you instinctively use the wrong wake phrase for the fifth time in a day.
Battery on the phone side
The persistent Bluetooth link plus periodic Wi-Fi transfers cost phone battery on both platforms. Anecdotally the hit is similar; nobody has published a controlled measurement, and we are not going to invent one.
Does this change which glasses to buy?
Mostly no — the gap is a platform gap, so it applies fairly evenly across brands. Two nuances are worth knowing:
- The Meta range (Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, Oakley Meta HSTN, Meta Ray-Ban Display) is the most mature companion software on both platforms, and also the one whose messaging features depend most on system integration — so it is where the iOS ceiling is most visible.

Before you buy, check these three things
- Your phone's OS version. Companion apps drop support for old versions faster than phone makers drop support for old phones. Check the minimum in the App Store or Play Store listing, not on the manufacturer's website.
- Whether the assistant is available in your country on your platform. Feature availability differs by region — in the EU some assistant features arrived late or arrived reduced — and occasionally by platform within the same region.
- How you actually plan to use them. If it is capture and questions, the platform barely matters. If it is hands-free messaging, Android is meaningfully better today.
The honest conclusion
Do not switch phones over this. The delta is real but small, and it is all at the edges: SMS replies, notification breadth, transfer speed, and which assistant answers when you talk.
