AI glasses with or without a display: which one you actually need

Almost everyone arrives at this decision backwards. They pick a model because they saw it in a video, then discover it does something other than what they expected.

The right question comes before any brand and any price: do you want glasses that talk to you, or glasses that show you things? They are two different products, with two different weights, two different battery lives and two ways of using them that have nothing in common.

This guide answers it in five minutes.

Three warnings before you go on:

  • XR glasses are not AI glasses. They are a monitor you wear, connected by USB-C to a phone, a console or a laptop. Without that cable they do nothing. They appear constantly in "best AI glasses" lists and have no business being there.
  • "With a display" does not mean augmented reality like in the films. It means a rectangle of green or colour text, roughly the size of a phone screen seen from a metre away. No 3D objects floating, no creatures in your living room.
  • Weight is deceptive. Glasses that weigh 50 grams do not feel like normal 30-gram glasses. Those twenty grams, resting on your nose for eight hours, are noticeable.

No display: the default choice

This is the category eating the market — 2.25 million units in the first quarter of 2026 alone, up 167 % year on year according to IDC — and there is a very simple reason: they are the only ones you can wear out of the house without anyone staring.

What they do well:

  • You can wear them all day. That is the entire achievement.
  • The camera is always ready. Capturing a scene without pulling out your phone changes what you capture.
  • The voice assistant answers questions about what you are looking at.
  • Live translation works without looking at a screen: you hear the translation through the speakers.
  • They double as decent open-ear headphones.

What they do not do:

  • You cannot read anything. Not a notification, not a map, not a message.
  • All information arrives as audio, which is slow. A list of five things takes fifteen seconds to hear and two to read.
  • In a noisy place you lose half of it.

Who they are for: almost everyone. If you are unsure, this is the right answer. Start with the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 or, if you exercise, the Oakley Meta HSTN.

With a display: for people who need to read

This is where visual information comes in: notifications, directions, subtitles of a conversation, teleprompter text.

What you gain:

  • Reading is far faster than listening. That is the whole advantage, and it is real.
  • Live subtitles of a conversation are the most convincing use case in the category: you see what someone is saying while they say it.
  • Navigation without taking your phone out.
  • Notifications without the interruption of looking at a screen.

What you pay:

  • Battery. This is the serious problem. The RayNeo X3 Pro manage about an hour and a half. Glasses that die mid-morning are not everyday glasses.
  • Price. From $479 for the cheapest to $1,399 for the X3 Pro.
  • People can tell you are wearing something. The waveguide is visible from outside, especially in bright light.
  • Eye strain. Focusing on a virtual screen close to your eye is more tiring than it sounds.

Who they are for: anyone with a concrete, nameable need. Subtitles for hearing difficulty, teleprompter, turn-by-turn directions, reading text without pulling out your phone. If you cannot say in one sentence what you want the display for, you do not need it.

Two cases that work today: the Even Realities G2, designed for reading text and with language support documented function by function, and the RayNeo iO, which at 33 grams and $479 are the most sensible thing announced this year in this family — with one caveat: they are not on sale yet, listed as coming soon in the European store.

XR: not what you are looking for (unless it is)

The XREAL One Pro and VITURE Luma Pro are excellent at their job: turning a phone or a console into a 130-inch screen wherever you are. For a long flight, or for working with two virtual monitors at a small desk, nothing beats them at that price.

But they have no AI, no camera, and they do not work without a cable. If you came looking for glasses with artificial intelligence, these are not it. They are on Glaiss so you can tell them apart, not because they compete.

That is why our comparisons warn you when you cross categories: comparing the overall score of XR glasses with that of AI glasses means nothing, because they do not measure the same thing.

The four questions that settle it

Answer them in order and you have your answer.

1. Do you want them on all day, or for specific moments? All day → no display. Specific moments → any of the three.

2. Do you need to read something, or is hearing it enough? Read → display. Hear → no display, and you save between $200 and $800.

3. How many hours in a row will you wear them? More than four → no display, no argument. Display battery does not stretch that far.

4. Do they need to be connected to something? If a cable to a phone is fine and you only want video or work → XR. If they have to work on their own → the other two.

An expensive mistake worth avoiding

The most common error is buying display glasses expecting them to replace your phone, then discovering a week later that they charge twice a day and the display gets used five minutes an hour.

The category that grew 167 % is not the one with the most technology: it is the one that gets in the way least. IDC attributes that growth to fashion and social acceptability, not to features. Frequently asked questions

What is the real difference between AI glasses with and without a display? Without a display they answer by voice through the speakers: you see nothing, you listen. With a display they project text and icons in front of your eye through a waveguide, so you can read notifications, directions or subtitles. In practice reading is much faster than listening, but it costs battery, money and discretion.

Do XR glasses like XREAL or VITURE have artificial intelligence? No. They are wearable monitors connected by USB-C to a phone, console or laptop, and without that cable they do nothing. They have no camera and no assistant. They appear in many "AI glasses" lists by mistake.

How long does the battery last on each type? Glasses without a display last four to eight hours of mixed use. Display glasses range from an hour and a half — the RayNeo X3 Pro — to about six hours on the more restrained models. XR glasses have no meaningful battery of their own: they draw from the device they are connected to.

Is it worth paying double for a display? Only if you can say in one sentence what you want the display for. Conversation subtitles, navigation or teleprompter are valid reasons. "Just in case" is not: you will end up using it a few minutes a day and charging the glasses twice.

Which should I buy if it is my first pair? Ones without a display. They are the most mature category, the best on battery, the least conspicuous and the cheapest. If you later miss being able to read things, you will know exactly which display you need and what for.

Can prescription lenses be fitted to AI glasses? In many cases yes, though the process and the price vary considerably by model and by country. Check with the manufacturer for the specific model before you buy.
